Sump Pump Installation & Repair

Sump Pump Installation & Repair

A sump pump pertains to a customized pump usually placed or installed upon the home’s lowest part. This is often a basement or a crawlspace. A sump pump works to keep the area and the whole home safe from flooding when in place.  Also, it can make sure that your home is moisture free and always dry. When working correctly, you don’t need to have second thoughts regarding this system. It handles the process on its own without any input from you. If something does happen, it is vital to call a reliable professional to assist you.

How Does A Sump Pump Work?

Sump pumps have differences in how they function. But, most function via a simple design. They are made in what’s called a sump pit. This pit enables water to drain into it. Once water hits the ground, it flows right into this pit because of the natural gravitational pull. Then the pump turns on when the water reaches a particular level. It pumps the water out and away from the pit and the building. This makes sure that water is moving far from the area and not into it. It turns on and off once the water reaches particular levels and doesn’t run all of the time.

Sump pumps normally come with a float that activates them on and off. Once the water rises in the pit hole, the float rises too. Once it reached a specific elevation, the sump pump instantly switches on and begins pumping out excess water.

Usually, sump pumps are wired into the main electrical system of your home. However, they need to have some form of power backup too. Some may use a car style battery as a power backup. However, if you do not want the idea of having a battery in the crawlspace, you can get one, which is power by water pressure.

How to Install a Sump Pump?

  1. Search the Place Where the Water Gather: While many choose to look for a spot close to the ground interrupter outlet, it’s better to find a sport where the flooding might happen.
  2. Dig a Hole: Ensure to measure how big the sump is prior to digging a hole, as this will provide you the details you want for your sump size. Measure the sump and then build your hole 6-inch deeper and 10-inch wider than the dimension of your sump. When done digging, you must put about three inches of gravel into the hole before putting the sump inside of the hole.
  3. Stand in the Sump: Doing this will compact it into the ground as your pour gravel around it. You have to do this to avoid the sump from shifting and becoming off-center. Leave an inch of the sump exposed at the top and fill it with gravel.
  4. Put in Adapters: Stick the male adapter into the discharge pipe. Then get the drill and make a ¼ inch hole, which is six inches above the pump. Then add the check valve. When done, check the pump and discharge water.
  5. Make a channel of water: With the use of 1 ½ inch PVC piping, make a tube for water to be discharged out of your basement. Then make a hole for the pipe using a hammer. Make sure it is big enough for the pipe to go outside your home.
  6. Seal Up the Hole: Ensure to seal the hole you made using a waterproof sealant like silicone. When done, let it dry prior to testing anything else.
  7. Mount at the end of the pipe: Apply an increase with a wide circumference, normally three or more inches to the end of the pipe outside. This enables water to flow out quickly and spread all through your yard, which avoids major puddles.
  8. Cover up the sump: Put gravel around the corrugated pipe to make it in place and put in the cover to the pump.
